Frequently Asked Questions
What are college showcase camps and should you attend them?
In January 2008 NCAA passed a rule prohibiting college coaches from attending any event that is not a high school practice or a game. So there will not be a single college coach at these camps. Organizers usually promise that they will send your numbers and video to colleges. More often than not, this is not the case. Do you think that any college coach wants to receive hundreds of numbers and videos of guys that might be good enough just because they attended a "showcase event"? I am guessing, "No".
Most kicking coaches will gladly make a call for you if you are good enough. If you are not, nobody will call for you - it is a business suicide to recommend guys that are not good enough.
If you are a good high chool kicker/punter, I will...
- teach you the skills and training that you need to know in order to kick in college
- work with you on finding schools that are the best fit athletically and academically
- contact coaches and recruiters and promote you as an athlete at whom they need to take a closer look
When should you start promoting yourself?
Second semester of your junior year is the time period when you want to start contacting coaches. As soon as the National Signing day is over (first Wednesday in February) college coaches start focusing on high school juniors to watch in the upcoming season. If you have good game footage from your junior season, you should put it on a DVD and get it to the coaches to look at. If you don't, go out on the field and film some good kicks. Your goal is to let coaches know that you have the potential to play at their school and they should watch you during your senior season.
What is the best way to showcase your skills to coaches?
College kicking camps. These are one day or half day "kicking camps" that are hosted by many colleges. You will not learn much here. Goal of these camps is to look at potential kickers and punters in person. A good showing at one of these events is the most direct route to a college scholarship. You should look to attend one of these in the summer prior to your senior year.
Highlight DVD. It helps to have your parents film your kicks and punts from the bleachers during your games. Have them film pregame and game. Between pregames and games, you should have 100s of kicks to choose from. Pick top 20 and record them on a DVD in order of best kick to 20th best kick. If you have good footage from a camp or a showcase event, you can mix it in there as well.
How can I help you?
I personally make sure that athletes with college potential kick in college
I frequently hear from schools that are looking for kickers and punters. If I don't have a connection at a school, I call/email and I make one. Below is an example of a real email exchange between myself and the director of football operations from Princeton University where I introduce one of the punters I worked with.
